Alpine Hiker Black Ostrich
Orders placed before 11:59 PM will ship on September 17
Description
The Alpine Hiker, in genuine ostrich leather.
There is one Alpine Hiker for the evening the day turns into. The Black Ostrich takes the same panelled construction and the same Vibram rubber outsole, and builds the upper in genuine ostrich leather, quill-textured and tonal. It is the premium piece of the range, and the one that needs nothing else in the outfit to carry it. Wide trouser, quiet everything else.
Two sets of laces come in the box: the tonal black pair you see here, and an off-white pair with black flecks if you want the contrast.
Ostrich is a leather that shows its origin. Every hide carries its quill marks in a different arrangement, so the pattern and density on your pair will not match the next pair. That is a characteristic of the hide, not a defect, and it is the reason no two pairs are identical.
Everything under the upper is shared with the rest of the range: a rubber toe cap, overbuilt metal eyelets, a full cowhide leather lining, a water-dyed cowhide sockliner and no midsole. The tonal laces keep the eye on the hide.
Style it the way the silhouette asks. Trousers with volume, straight or wide, the hem stacking on the collar. Keep the rest of the outfit quiet and let the texture do the talking. The build was proven in the Swiss Alps in July, which you can read in Off Trail Days. This is the version for the evening after.
The Vibram outsole
The same Vibram rubber outsole as the rest of the range, yellow octagon included. Deep lugs, widely spaced, built to shed mud on a wet trail and still walk cleanly on a city street. No midsole between you and it: leather lining, water-dyed cowhide sockliner, Vibram rubber.

Fit
EU 38 to 47. It fits true to size; order your usual size, or check the foot-length guide on this page. The silhouette is substantial and asks for a trouser with volume; a tapered or cropped hem works against it.
Care
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after wear. If the hide looks dry, a very light neutral leather cream is enough; no coloured polish, no heavy wax. Dry naturally away from direct heat, and do not soak. The quill pattern is part of the hide and needs no treatment. The water-dyed cowhide sockliner darkens with wear; that is expected.
CARE TIPS
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt. For scuffs, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner suitable for leather. Avoid harsh chemicals, high heat, and traditional leather polishes.

Built With Intent
Every Paper Straight shoe begins with a last, a wooden form shaped to define the silhouette before a single cut is made. From there, patterns are drawn by hand, leather is selected and cut with precision, and each panel is stitched together piece by piece.
Our soles are molded in-house using custom Paper Straight tooling, designed for grip, durability and a profile that holds its shape over time. Metal hardware is set by hand. Insoles are branded and layered for comfort. Every pair passes through dozens of hands before it reaches yours.
There are no shortcuts in this process. From the first sketch to the final lace, each step is guided by one principle, build it once, build it right. This is what it means to be Paper Straight.
