Alpine Hiker Brown

Description
Built for the day the trail runs out.
Saturday starts early and ends somewhere past the end of the trail. The Alpine Hiker Brown is the pair for that day: a warm suede upper over a Vibram rubber outsole, gold-toned eyelets, tonal laces. It reads outdoors, and it disappears into everything you already own in earth tones. Then on Monday it goes to work under a wide-leg trouser.
Two sets of laces come in the box: the tonal pair you see here, and an off-white pair with black flecks for contrast.
Brown is the version that reads outdoors. The suede sits warm against the dark outsole, and the gold-toned eyelets keep the whole shoe in one register. That is why it disappears into what you already wear: olive, tan, washed black, raw denim. Nothing in the outfit has to be adjusted for it.
The silhouette is substantial, so give it a trouser with volume. Wide leg, straight leg, anything with a bit of stack at the hem. A cropped or tapered leg fights it. White ribbed socks finish the Brown properly.
The Vibram outsole
The outsole is Vibram rubber, the yellow octagon set into the sole. The lugs are deep and widely spaced so mud clears instead of packing, and the flatter zone under the ball of the foot means the shoe still walks properly on pavement. Underfoot there is no midsole: you stand on the water-dyed cowhide sockliner, the leather lining and the Vibram rubber, nothing else. We tested exactly that in July; the whole story is in Off Trail Days, photographed in the Swiss Alps.

Fit
Sizes EU 38 to 47 (UK 5.5 to 12.5, US 6 to 13). It fits true to size; order the size you normally wear, or check the foot-length guide on this page. The Alpine Hiker is a substantial silhouette; it is cut for trousers with volume, not for a cropped or tapered leg.
Care
Suede. Let mud dry, then brush it off with a suede brush; do not use cream or polish on the upper. A suede protector before the first wear helps it shed water. Dry naturally, away from direct heat, and do not soak. The water-dyed cowhide sockliner darkens with wear; that is expected.
CARE TIPS
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dirt. For scuffs, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner suitable for leather. Avoid harsh chemicals, high heat, and traditional leather polishes.

Built With Intent
Every Paper Straight shoe begins with a last, a wooden form shaped to define the silhouette before a single cut is made. From there, patterns are drawn by hand, leather is selected and cut with precision, and each panel is stitched together piece by piece.
Our soles are molded in-house using custom Paper Straight tooling, designed for grip, durability and a profile that holds its shape over time. Metal hardware is set by hand. Insoles are branded and layered for comfort. Every pair passes through dozens of hands before it reaches yours.
There are no shortcuts in this process. From the first sketch to the final lace, each step is guided by one principle, build it once, build it right. This is what it means to be Paper Straight.
